Setup

Your first source of information on setting up for HallNet should be the HallNet Mini Guide, a double-sided A4 handout available from your hall reception. It can also be downloaded here:

Hallnet Mini Guide

The Mini Guide provides general information on HallNet, and gives setup instructions for computers running Windows XP and Windows Vista. More detailed setup information including screen-shots, for Windows XP, Windows Vista and for other operating systems can be found on these pages.

Another useful document is:

How to set up your web browser and email for HallNet & WanderNet

If you are reading this from your room in halls on a computer running Microsoft Windows, and have not read the HallNet Mini Guide, we suggest you stop reading and disconnect the network cable immediately.

It is likely you have the standard Microsoft network settings which are not safe unless your computer has the very latest security updates (these come out every month). In the time it takes to read this sentence your computer could be hit by an Internet worm and infested with one or more viruses. We would soon detect this and restrict your access to protect other HallNet users.

Before reconnecting, get hold of a the Mini Guide or read these pages on a pooled room computer and print out relevant pages, and follow the advice on network and security settings.
